We have people of all technical levels and position ask this question along with the question:  Is SAN better than NAS?

SAN and NAS are protocols.   Each has their best practices and use cases. Each can complement one another, many large organizations own both.  NAS and SAN use similar hardware including; storage controllers, enhanced software features including RAID protection over groups of hard drives.

Let’s take a look at the difference.

Network Attached Storage

Network Attached Storage (NAS) Configuration

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

NAS is file level storage array attached to a network, usually ethernet.   NAS normally uses NFS or CIFS or even HTTP.   NAS appears to the user as a shared folder and multiple employees can access these folders across their LAN network. NAS systems normally connect directly into the network LAN switch and users directly access the NAS across their network. No servers are required.

How does PAC Storage fit into your NAS infrastructure? PAC systems all ship with single or dual controllers offering options for no single point of failure with multiple connection options.   PAC has as many as 25 host port connections including; 1Gb, 10Gb, 25Gb and 40Gb. PAC offers NAS systems starting at entry level, low cost systems to very high performance and scalability to multiple controllers and capacities of over 100PBs.

SAN Configuration

Storage Area Network (SAN) Configuration

Storage Area Networks (SAN)

SAN is a dedicated high-performance network running block level storage. Servers connect to the SAN fabric (switches) using host bus adapters (HBAs).   Servers identify the SAN through the dedicated switch so multiple servers can share the storage Pool. Normally SAN environments are much faster than NAS.

How does PAC Storage fit into your SAN infrastructure? PAC systems all ship with dual controllers offering no single point of failure with multiple connection options.   PAC has as many as 25 host connections including; 10Gb, 25Gb and 40Gb iSCSI plus 8, 16 and 32Gb Fibre Channel. Available controller/chassis options include; entry level cost efficient to extreme high performance, All Flash or maximum capacity.

How can we help you? What is the best storage solution for your business?

PAC Storage has been implementing SAN and NAS solutions for over 15 years.   All PAC Storage products offer SAN, NAS and include a cloud gateway with a complete suite of software enhancements including; snap shot, replication etc. All systems can expand to PBs of storage, including multiple performance tiers.
